LONDON — Andrea Bocelli, James Blunt and Idina Menzel will lead the stars taking to the stage at the Royal Variety Performance 2026, headlining a line-up announced on Wednesday, 28 October, that moves from Italian opera to West End musical theatre, chart pop, circus and stand-up comedy over the course of a single evening. Comedian Jason Manford will host the performance for the third time, in what will be his sixth appearance at the event.

The announcement confirms one of the most musically wide-ranging bills in the event’s recent history. At one end of the programme stands Bocelli, among the most successful classical singers in the world; at the other, a choir of farmers who won Britain’s Got Talent this year. Between them come a Broadway original returning to the role that made her famous, a former soldier turned pop star fresh from reality television, and a succession of productions from the London stage. It is, in the best Royal Variety tradition, a bill designed so that no two acts resemble each other.

A HOST WHO KNOWS THE ROOM

Manford’s return is the thread that ties the evening together. Hosting for a third time, and making his sixth appearance at the performance overall, he takes on a job unlike any other in British entertainment: part compère, part comedian, part ringmaster, linking acts that share nothing except the stage. “What a huge privilege to be asked to host The Royal Variety Performance for a third time,” he said. “It’s an amazing line-up in aid of a wonderful charity, so I can’t wait for everybody to see what surprises we have up our sleeves this year.” A third invitation is its own verdict — producers do not hand this particular evening to a host they do not trust completely.

BOCELLI MARKS THIRTY YEARS

Bocelli will appear to celebrate 30 years since he first became an international star, a milestone that gives the night its ceremonial centre of gravity. Across those three decades, the Italian tenor has built the defining crossover career in classical music, carrying operatic singing to audiences who might never set foot in an opera house. For an event founded on bringing different audiences into the same room, few performers embody the idea more completely. His appearance is billed as a celebration, and it is easy to see why: thirty years at the top of a field he helped to redraw is a landmark by any measure.

MENZEL RETURNS TO OZ

For musical theatre audiences, the evening’s most anticipated moment may belong to Menzel. The original Elphaba in Wicked, she will perform The Wizard and I alongside the musical’s composer, Stephen Schwartz. The number is Elphaba’s first great solo in the show — a song of hope sung before the story turns — and it has belonged to Menzel since she first performed it on stage. Hearing it from the actor who originated the role, with the composer beside her, is the kind of one-night-only pairing the Royal Variety exists to create. Wicked’s journey from stage phenomenon to screen event has only widened the audience waiting to hear it.

BLUNT, WILLIAMS AND A ROYAL VARIETY DEBUT

Blunt, currently familiar to millions as a Celebrity Traitors star, will perform on the night, adding a reality-television chapter to a career that has already taken him from the army to the top of the charts. He is joined by Vanessa Williams, the former Desperate Housewives star, who will sing Save the Best for Last — her 1992 hit, and the song that remains her signature more than three decades on. Completing the headline music names, singer Jack Savoretti will make his Royal Variety debut, the latest milestone in a slow-burning career built on live performance. Between them, the three cover pop, soul and singer-songwriter territory in a single stretch of the bill.

A STAGE FULL OF MUSICAL THEATRE

Theatre takes up a remarkable share of the evening. There will be a medley from the revival of Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice’s Jesus Christ Superstar, led by Sam Ryder — a singer whose own rise, from social media covers to representing his country on the Eurovision stage, makes him a natural frontman for a rock musical built on big voices. Ahead of its return to the West End, the cast of Billy Elliot the Musical will perform Electricity, the show’s soaring centrepiece. Audiences will also see a preview performance of The Greatest Show from the upcoming West End musical The Greatest Showman, offering a first taste of the stage adaptation before it opens. And in one of the night’s most distinctive segments, the musical Operation Mincemeat will bring current and original cast members together on stage, joined by the Royal Naval Association Choir and military bands — members of The Band of His Majesty’s Royal Marines, The Band of the Irish Guards and the Band of the Welsh Guards Fanfare Team.

THE WINNERS, THE COMICS AND THE CIRCUS

Britain’s Got Talent winners The Hawkstone Farmers’ Choir will perform after becoming the first choir ever to win the show this year — a victory for performers who spend their days working the land, and one of the most popular results in the programme’s history. The comedy on the bill comes from two sharply different craftsmen: Milton Jones, the master of the surreal one-liner, and Phil Wang, whose stand-up blends the personal and the political. The spectacle, meanwhile, arrives from the circus world: acrobatic duo The Ramadhani Brothers and head balancer Veronika Ivanova, from the circus show Cirque Alice, will both make their European debuts during the performance — the kind of booking that reminds audiences this stage has always made room for variety in its oldest sense.

ALFIE BOE AND THE ANTHEM

Tenor Alfie Boe will lead the national anthem, giving the evening a traditional close and bringing its classical thread full circle — from Bocelli’s anniversary appearance at one end of the bill to Boe’s anthem at the other. Between those two tenors sits almost everything British light entertainment currently has to offer.

WHAT TO WATCH

Analysis — the Royal Variety formula has endured for generations because it refuses to choose between prestige and popularity, and this year’s bill is a particularly clear statement of that philosophy. Heritage is honoured: a tenor’s thirty-year milestone, a 1992 hit performed by the woman who recorded it, an anthem led by one of Britain’s best-known tenors. But the present tense of entertainment is just as present — a pop star arriving via a hit reality show, a farmers’ choir carried there by a public vote, and a West End pipeline using the night as its shop window. The weight given to musical theatre is the bill’s boldest feature: four stage productions, plus Menzel and Schwartz revisiting Wicked, suggests producers see the London stage not as one ingredient among many but as the evening’s engine. With Manford — experienced, unflappable, and now hosting for a third time — holding it all together, the 2026 performance looks less like a variety show in the old sense than a snapshot of where British entertainment actually lives now: everywhere at once.

Jason Manford’s remarks are quoted as reported in that announcement coverage; the Hawkstone Farmers’ Choir’s status as the first choir to win Britain’s Got Talent is as reported in the same coverage. Background — Menzel as the original Elphaba in Wicked, Williams as a former Desperate Housewives star and Save the Best for Last as her 1992 hit, and Blunt’s appearance on Celebrity Traitors — is as stated in the announcement and a matter of documented public record.
